Try this easy miso brown rice tonight; it goes well with just about anything. You can serve it as a side dish, but it’s also great on its own with a simple salad.

I often have an open container of miso in my fridge. I use it a lot to make this miso brown rice. It takes a plain bowl of cooked rice one step further, yet the dish stays simple enough to go well with almost any main.

For instance, you can serve it with Glazed Asian Turkey Meatballs or Thai Pork Curry.

    Recipe ingredients

labeled ingredients for making brown rice with miso, soy sauce, sesame oil, and cilantro.

All you need are brown rice, miso, a bit of soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, pepper, and some cilantro or parsley (optional). That’s it!

Miso paste is a thick, salty paste made from fermented soybeans. It adds a deep, savory flavor to many Japanese dishes. There are different types, like white miso, which is milder, and red miso, which has a stronger taste.

I use white miso for today’s miso brown rice recipe. It’s mild and slightly sweet; it flavors the rice nicely without overpowering it.

See the recipe card for the full recipe and ingredient quantities.

How to make miso brown rice?

uncooked brown rice covered with water in a small pot.

Step #1: Rinse the rice. Place it in a pot and cover it with water, adding salt and soy sauce.

Step #3: Fluff with a fork, add miso and sesame oil, and toss gently to combine.

Step #4: Add chopped cilantro and serve.

    Tips

Always check the package for the recommended cooking time.

This recipe also works with white rice, but you’ll need to follow the package’s directions for the correct rice-to-water ratio and cooking time. Try the Lemon Dill Rice, too.

    Storage

Refrigerate: Let cool, place in an airtight container, and refrigerate for 3-4 days.

Freeze for up to 3 months and defrost in the fridge.

To reheat it, add a splash of water and warm it gently on the stove or in the microwave. I prefer the microwave when reheating rice.

    Ingredients

    • 1 ½ cups brown rice Note 1
    • 3 ¼ cups water
    • ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
    • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
    • 3 teaspoons white miso Note 2
    • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
    • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
    • a few sprigs of cilantro or parsley, optional

    Instructions

    • Rinse the brown rice in a sieve under cold running water and place it in a small pot. Add water, salt, and soy sauce.
      1 ½ cups brown rice + 3 ¼ cups water + ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt + 1 tablespoon soy sauce
    • Cook the rice: Bring the water to a boil, cover the pot, then turn the heat down to low and simmer the rice until it’s tender and the water has been absorbed. It will take about 45 minutes, but be sure to check the package instructions.
    • Add miso: Fluff the rice and gently stir in the miso, sesame oil, pepper, and chopped herbs.
3 teaspoons white miso + 1 tablespoon sesame oil + ¼ teaspoon black pepper + a few sprigs of cilantro

    Notes

    1. Rice: Make sure to check the package instructions regarding the appropriate cooking time. You can also make this recipe with white rice, but you will have to pay attention to the package instructions about the right rice and water ratio and cooking time.
    2. White miso is the best choice, as it is flavorful yet mild. Red miso paste might be overpowering.
